第三类反应围绕化学键的产生或断裂来改变碳-碳骨架结构。目前C-C键合成方法所取得巨大的进步，使得科学家可以选择超过100多种不同的反应。这些进步归功于多种因素，例如稳健可靠的交叉偶联方法的发展、多种有机金属试剂以及化学合成试剂的问世。
