人野生型 p53 蛋白是一种 393 个氨基酸的核磷蛋白，存在于所有正常哺乳动物细胞的细胞核中，似乎与细胞增殖的调节有关。正常蛋白质的半衰期非常短，并且在正常组织和细胞中表达量极低。相比之下，恶性细胞产生的突变型 p53 蛋白通常是 p53 基因中点突变的产物，该突变导致单个氨基酸的取代，从而大大延长了该蛋白的半衰期。高水平 p53 的积累是恶性肿瘤的潜在新标志。
