General description
N,N - Dimethylformamide (DMF) is a highly effective polar aprotic solvent for a wide range of compounds. This is due to its ability to interact effectively with different compounds. DMF can function as both an electrophilic and nucleophilic agent, and it can provide various key intermediates that mediate chemical reactions.
Application
N,N-Dimethylformamide (DMF) is used
- As a solvent in the Wittig reaction for synthesizing α-hydroxy amides.
- In the preparation of the Vilsmeier reagent when treated with phosphorus oxychloride or other acid chlorides, which is utilized for formylating, halogenating, and dehydroxylating reactions.
- As a solvent in the synthesis of alkyl halides from alcohols.
- As a co-solvent to examine the relationship between medium polarity and drug solubility.
