The gene CYP2E1 (cytochrome P450 2E1) is mapped to human chromosome 10. The CYP2E1 gene is polymorphic. It belongs to the cytochrome P450 (CYP) family of enzymes.

CYP2E1 (cytochrome P450 2E1) is involved in phase 1 oxidative xenobiotic metabolism. It is responsible for activation of low molecular weight molecules, including ethanol, carcinogens, some toxins and drugs. The CYP2E1 RsaI/PstI polymorphism is associated with oral cancer.
