p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), also known as, mitogen-activated protein kinase 14 (MAPK14)/ p38α, is encoded by the gene mapped on human chromosome 6p21.31. The encoded protein is a Ser/Thr kinase composed of 90 to 360 residues. p38α MAPK is ubiquitously expressed. It is found in the cytosol, but it can translocate to the nucleus.

The antiserum was produced against synthesized peptide derived from human p38 MAPK.

Genetic variation in p38α leads to deletion or overproduction of myelosuppressive cytokines and result in certain bone marrow failure syndromes.
