General description

Isopropyl alcohol (IPA, 2-propanol, isopropanol) is a water soluble aliphatic alcohol with a sweet odor. It is one of the volatile flavor compound found in Tricholoma matsutake,a fungi used in Japanese dishes for its aromatic flavor. IPA is also a major flavor component in lemon essence.

Application

Isopropyl alcohol has been used:
  • in oil red O staining of the adipocytes to dissolve the stain and extract the stain from the cell
  • as a component of the saponification and acetylacetone reagent and to prepare triglyceride standard stock solution to extract liver triglyceride (TG)
  • to flush through the microfluidic device before experiments to effectively remove air bubbles from the channels

Features and Benefits

1-Propanol and 2-propanol are isomers of an alcohol with three carbons. They are colorless liquids with a sweet odor. 1-Propanol is metabolized by alcohol dehydrogenase to propionic acid and presents with metabolic acidosis and elevated anion gap, whereas 2-propanol is
