Gene Information

General description

Thyroxine or T4 is a thyroid hormone responsible for regulation of the body′s basal metabolic rate and essential for growth, development and heart and nervous system function. Free and total T4 serum levels are measured by LC-MS/MS for determination of hyper- or hypothyroidism as well as for monitoring treatment with synthetic thyroid hormones. Certified Spiking Solutions® are suitable for use in LC-MS/MS testing methods as starting materials in preparation of linearity standards, calibrators, and controls.

Biochem/physiol Actions

L-Thyroxine (T4) and triiodo-L-thyronine (T3) are iodine-containing hormones produced from thyroglobulin in the thyroid follicular cells. The stimulation of metabolic rate and regulation of growth and development by these hormones appear to be due to their effects on DNA transcription and, thus, protein synthesis.

Protocols

Determination of the thyroid hormones T4, T3 and rT3 from plasma using an Ascentis Express RP-Amide cartridge to trap the analytes, and a Phenyl-Hexyl column to resolve them.

Thyroid hormone is crucial for brain development during foetal and neonatal life. In very preterm infants, transient low levels of plasma T4 and T3 are commonly found, a phenomenon referred to as transient hypothyroxinaemia of prematurity. We investigated whether breast

Allan-Herndon-Dudley syndrome (AHDS), a severe form of psychomotor retardation with abnormal thyroid hormone (TH) parameters, is linked to mutations in the TH-specific monocarboxylate transporter MCT8. In mice, deletion of Mct8 (Mct8 KO) faithfully replicates AHDS-associated endocrine abnormalities; however, unlike patients

Preterm infants commonly have transient hypothyroxinemia of prematurity after birth, which has been associated with deficits in general intellectual functioning, memory, attention, and academic achievement. However, research has predominantly focused on thyroxine levels in the first 2 weeks of life
