General description

Phenol is an aromatic alcohol. Various industrial processes for the synthesis of phenol have been proposed. It can undergo oxidation in the presence of Fentons′ reagent in aqueous solution.

Application

Phenol may be employed in the following studies:
  • Isolation of deoxyribonucleic acid from Bacillus subtilis.
  • Berthelot color reaction for the estimation of ammonia.
  • Preparation of phenetole (aromatic ether) and 1,2-dihydroxybenzene (catechol).
  • Synthesis of phenoxyacetic acid.
Phenol may be used in the following processes:
  • As a phase-transfer catalyst in electrolyte solutions of lithium-O2 battery to promote solution phase discharge.
  • Preparation of phenol-sulfuric acid reagent for colorimetric determination of total sugar content.

Legal Information

ReagentPlus is a registered trademark of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany
