General description

Sodium hydroxide solution is a strong alkaline solution which may be suitable to make dyes, drugs, cellophane, rayon and bleaches. It may also be suitable for petrochemical industry to remove impurities. This solution needs to be handled carefully, close proximity or ingestion could cause blindness, permanent scarring and sometimes can be fatal.

Application

Sodium hydroxide solution may be used to characterize the morphology of the produced colloids using UV-Visible spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. It may be used to measure specific heats using calorimeter. It may also be used to study the first stages of silver oxidation using voltammetry and ellipsometry.

Metrohm IC application note AN-P-055:Lactose residues in "lactose-free" milk.
