General description

Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) is a polymer of ethylene glycol units and is hydrophilic in nature. PEG has high hydration capacity and is structurally flexible. PEG has advantage as a drug conjugate due to biocompatibility and nonexistence of steric hindrances in its structure.
We are committed to bringing you Greener Alternative Products, which adhere to one or more of The 12 Principles of Green Chemistry. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is an eco-friendly, biodegradable polymer widely used in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Its non-toxic nature and versatility make it a sustainable choice, derived from renewable resources, contributing to greener product formulations. Click here for more information.

Application

Poly(ethylene glycol) has been used:
  • in the transformation buffer in yeast
  • as a constituent of dengue virus isolation buffer
  • for concentration of lentivirus particles
  • in the crystallization of herpesvirus nuclear egress complex (NEC)

Biochem/physiol Actions

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved PEG as drug conjugates, is nonimmunogenic and safe. PEG is widely used as a reagent in biochemistry and molecular biology experiments. PEG conjugation improves solubility and dissolution of diabetes drug, Gliclazide. It is used in carbon nanotube functionalization. The presence of PEG 8000 in the tannin tree foliage improves metabolisable energy (ME) content and gas production.
