General description
Agar, also known as agar-agar, is one of the biochemical agents most used in microbiology field. It is obtained from red algae Rhodophyceae, is the most abundantly used gelling agent in culture media. Agar is polysaccharide complex, composed of 70% agarose and 30% agaropectin.
Application
Agar has been used:
- to culture Staphylococcus aureus for phage infection studies
- as a supplement with NZCYM media for culturing Campylobacter coli strains for lysogeny screening
- as a basic media component to improve in vitro ovule and embryo culture methods of cross Chitalpa hybrids to facilitate the rescue of triploids
- in the culture media for Bdellovibrio spp. and Micavibrio spp. strains to check their susceptibility towards a variety of select agents
Other Notes
A purified agar from which the naturally occurring pigments, salts and miscellaneous matter has been reduced to a minimum.

Water is arguably the most important constituent of microbial microhabitats due to its control of physical and physiological processes critical to microbial activity. In natural environments, bacteria often live on unsaturated surfaces, in thin (micrometric) liquid films. Nevertheless, no experimental

We report a previously undescribed mechanism for the rugose morphotype in Shewanella oneidensis, a research model for investigating redox transformations of environmental contaminants. Bacteria may form smooth or rugose colonies on agar plates. In general, conversion from the smooth to

Chemical syntheses and biological evaluation of biscatecholate-monohydroxamate mixed ligand sideromycins utilizing the carbacephalosporin β-lactam antibiotic loracarbef and the fluoroquinolone antibiotic ciprofloxacin are described. The mixed ligand β-lactam sideromycin (1b) had remarkably selective and extremely potent antibacterial activity against the Gram-negative
