General description

Fucoidan is a fucose-rich, sulfated polysaccharide isolated from several species of brown seaweed.

Application

Fucoidan from Fucus vesiculosus has been to:
  • study the application of heparin red in detecting fucoidan
  • study its bioactivity as an antimicrobial agent
  • study its effects on advanced glycation end-products

Biochem/physiol Actions

Studies of fucoidan have found it to have a broad variety of biological activities including antitumor and antiangogenic activities, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant, antithrombotic, and antioxidant activities. Fucoidan induces macrophage activation with subsequently activates mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and results in natural killer cell proliferation. Fucoidan acts as a nonselective selectin blocker and has been shown to induce apoptosis and suppress angiogenesis.

Fucoidans from brown macroalgae have beneficial biomedical properties but their use as pharma products requires homogenous oligomeric products. In this study, the action of five recombinant microbial fucoidan degrading enzymes were evaluated on fucoidans from brown macroalgae: Sargassum mcclurei, Fucus

Fucoidans, sulfated polysaccharides extracted from brown algae, are marine products with the potential to modulate bone formation and vascularization processes. The bioactivity and safety of fucoidans are highly associated with their chemical structure, which may vary with algae species and
