General description

Triethanolamine, a derivative of ammonia, belongs to the family of ethanolamine. It exhibits the properties of both amines and alcohols. Hence, it can react with acids to form salts and also undergo esterification. It is commonly used in the preparation of detergent raw materials, emulsifiers and in cement production, etc. It is also used as a chemical absorbent to remove acid gases like CO2 and H2S.

Application

Triethanolamine can be used:
  • As an electron donor in H2 evolution studies under photocatalytic conditions.
  • As a template in the synthesis of a mesoporous catalyst comprising iron (Fe-TUD-1), which is used in Friedel-Crafts benzylation.
  • As a template and a metal complexing agent in the synthesis of a mesoporous catalyst comprising zirconium (Zr-TUD-1), which is used in Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley reduction.
