次氯酸钠溶液可作为氧化剂，用于氧化:      

• 伯醇为醛或羧酸，仲醇为酮。     
• 芳基醛在相转移催化剂的存在下为相应的酸。      
• 醚为酯通过仔细控制pH（pH范围为8-9.5），

它还可作为试剂用于：      

• 烯酮和多环芳烃的环氧化。      
• 氧化降解发硬      
• 伯胺和仲胺的N-氯化作用
• α, β-不饱和酮的对映选择性活化      
• 烯烃在锇催化剂作用下的不对称二羟基化反应      
• 在CeCl_{3存在下的烯丙基碳氯化反应}
