Saponins, belonging to the class of steroid or triterpenoid glycosides, are widely distributed in plants, marine animals, and certain bacteria, serving as crucial compounds in various research fields, including biochemical, cell biology, and beyond. These amphipathic glycosides exhibit soap-like foaming in aqueous solutions due to their distinctive structure, featuring hydrophilic glycoside moieties combined with a lipophilic triterpene derivative.

Beyond their structural uniqueness, saponins play essential roles in biochemical processes, acting as secondary metabolites that facilitate protein penetration through cell membranes. Saponins are nonionic surfactant that forms oil-in-water emulsions and acts as a protective colloid. They are used for the direct determination of metals in milk by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry.
